This song evokes the spine-tingling energy at a full moon gathering on Ham Hill in Somerset when the tribes were setting off on their hand-carting journey into the West...
We wanted to be independent wanderers. We chose not to have vehicles, like cars and vans, because of the impact of fossil fuels. Because we had been so involved in campaigning against roads.
We wanted to be able to travel the land as a group and in a light-touch way. And be able to go places you wouldn't be able to with a contingent of 12-15 living vehicles.
We had built our handcarts and we had a celebration at Ham Hill to mark the start of what we called The Freedom Trail.
This was to become a 5 year walk across 5 counties!
